INFLUENCE OF MICROBLOGGING ON YOUTH PARTICIPATION IN ELECTIONEERING

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to ascertain how influential and effective microblogging is on youth participation in electoral communication in south-south, Nigeria, in respect to the rate of microblogs usage. Based on the uses and gratification and democratic-participant theories, the study used survey design with the aid of 23-item questionnaire. The sample cut across 400 youth in south-south region of Nigeria though 398 was available for the study. Youth from all the six states in the south-south region of Nigeria were purposively and randomly selected. Data generated were presented and analyzed using frequency tables and simple percentage. Findings showed that youth from south-south, Nigeria use microblogs, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn were the mostly used of them all. It also showed that microblogging is an effective and influential tool used by youth for all form of political communication. From the above, it can be stated that the study has revealed that the use of microblog by south-south Nigerian youth remains a viable and dependable means of dissemination of electoral information speedily, political campaigns, monitoring of electoral processes amongst others. The study recommended that platforms like microblogging sites that are democratized and more electorate inclusive should be adopted and policies should be made to encourage more usage of these platforms by youth.
