INFLUENCE OF LITERACY PROGRAMME ON THE REDUCTION OF YOUTH RESTIVENESS IN ANIOCHA NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF DELTA STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the influence of literacy programme on the reduction of youth restiveness in Aniocha North local government area of Delta State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised to guide the study. The adopted a descriptive survey design and had a sample of 72 respondents selected through a simple random sampling technique. The questionnaire titled: Influence of Literacy Programme in the Reduction of Youth Restiveness Questionnaire (ILPRYRQ) was the instrument for data collection. The validity of the instrument was ensure through the experts’ judgment approach and its reliability was determined using the Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) formula with a correlation coefficient of 0.71. The data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics which involved simple percentages, and mean score analysis. The findings from the study showed that youth restiveness greatly impact on the socio-cultural and socio-economic life in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State as it often leads to the destruction of valuable properties, high rate of unemployment and this, driving away local and foreign investors and economic deprivation. It was concluded that literacy programme helped to curb the menace of youth restiveness in Aniocha North Local Government Area of Delta State as it offers youths the opportunity to acquire skills, values and knowledge which will sustain them in future thereby bringing about reduction in the level of youth restiveness. It was therefore recommended among others that literacy programmes should be geared towards the acquisition of skills, values and knowledge which will sustain youths in future thereby bringing about reduction in the level of youth restivenes.
