ABSTRACT
This study investigates the influence of home environment on the academic performance among secondary school students in Benin Metropolis. Five (5) research questions were raised to guide the study.
Five hundred and fifty seven (557) respondents were used for the study. The sample was collected using simple random sampling technique. The major instrument used for this study was the questionnaire. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as tables, frequencies counts, and simple percentages
Findings of the study revealed that type (polygamy/monogamy) influence students’ academic performance. It was further revealed that parental educational level affects students’ academic performance in school. Based on the conclusion drawn from the findings, the following recommendations was proffered. Parents should create more awareness that monogamy is better because it influences children academic performance positively. Monogamy parents are more likely to care for children and provide them with learning materials since they are likely to have small family size than their counterparts in polygamous homes. It was further recommended that parents should make out time to reach out with their children’s teacher from time to time to update them with their children’s academic progress
