INFLUENCE OF HOME ECONOMICS LABORATORY FOR EFFECTIVE TEACHING AND LEARNING OF HOME ECONOMICS IN JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study determined the influence of Home Economics Laboratory in effective teaching and learning of home economics in junior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area. Four research questions were raised to guide the study and one hypothesis was formulated and tested at 0.05 level significance. The study employed a descriptive survey research design. The population of this study comprised 4,600 students in 14 public junior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample for this study was made up of 120 JSS students in 4 secondary schools in Oredo LGA of Edo State. Two (2)% of the population was used to form the sample size of the study through proportionate sampling technique. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire. The questionnaire was titled Influence of Home Economics Laboratory on the Effective Teaching and Learning of Home Economics (IHELETLHE). The instrument was segmented into two sections, section A and B. Section A covered the demographic information from the students such as; sex, age, class, school type. Section B of the research consisted of 20 items used to elicit items related to the research questions. The instrument designed by the researcher was subjected for face validation by the researcher supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education (VTE), Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Benin City. The reliability of the instrument was obtained using internal consistency method. This method was done by using Cronbach Alpha Statistics. The instrument was administered to 20 students who are not part of the population. Am alpha value above of 0.85 was obtained which show that the instrument was reliable. The findings were Home Economics laboratory in secondary schools in Oregon LGA are not well equipped for effective teaching and learning, students have low knowledge about the use of home economics laboratory, the laboratory equipment influences students interest in learning of home economics to a high extent, Laboratory equipment influences students development of practical skills in home economics to a high extent and there is no significant difference between male and female students on influence of home economics laboratory equipment for the effective teaching and learning of home economics in junior secondary schools in Order Local Government Area. It was concluded that Home Economics Laboratory significantly promote effective teaching and learning of home economics in junior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area.
