INFLUENCE OF FAMILY INSTABILITY ON CHILD UPBRINGING IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the influence of family instability on child upbringing in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, five research questions were raised. Data was collected from 75 respondents randomly selected from the 15 public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection, comprising of two sections A & B Section A solicited information on the demographic details of the respondents while section B elicited information on the variables of the study. The mean and standard deviation was used to analyze the data obtained. The findings from the study include that the causes of family instability in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State include extramarital affairs, lack of communication, financial difficulties and conflict of interest. It was concluded that family instability greatly influence child upbringing in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. It was therefore recommended among others that government should enforce stringent laws regarding divorce so as to discourage couples from bringing an abrupt end to the family at the expense of the children.
