ABSTRACT
This study, anchored on the tenets of the Cultivation theory assessed UNIBEN students’ evaluation of the influence of celebrities dressing on the dressing pattern of students in UNIBEN. This study became necessary in other to determine why students in UNIBEN dress the way they dress for classes. Using the survey design, 11-iten questionnaire was used to generate data from 398 students randomly selected to represent and reflect the opinions of students in the 14 faculties in UNIBEN. Simple percentages, Frequency Tables and Mean score were used to analyze the data generated through 4-point Likert scale and multi-choice format. The study revealed that students’ dressing is western in nature and not African in nature and that they like celebrities’ dressing. Also, it was discovered that the most celebrity that influences the dressing pattern of students is Naira Marley. It was concluded that to a very high level, celebrities’ dressing patterns would continue to influence the dressing patterns of students in tertiary institutions in one way or the other. Hence it was recommended that for this can be massively reduced if we do what is right at the right time. Therefore, in order to eliminate indecent dressing, strict enforcement of dress codes should be introduced in Colleges of Education, Polytechnics and Universities across the country.
