ABSTRACT
The creation of local government administration anywhere in the world cannot be overemphasized as it reveals the need to aid development at the grassroots level. The study sought to know the problems and prospects of local government administration in Nigeria and the way forward for future development. The researcher adopted a quantitative research method and obtained data from respondents using a questionnaire shared in four districts in Oredo LGA. 400 questionnaires were distributed for the study with a 100% return rate. From the results, the main challenges affecting effective administration in the local government includes inadequate finance, mismanagement of federal allocation, and lack of well trained personnel in appropriate positions of authority. Recommendations to solve these challenges include granting financial autonomy to local government administration in order for them to perform without the interference from the state government and strengthening the local Government Service Commission.
