ABSTRACT

Indigenous fruit holds significant economic potential in contributing to rural livelihoods and sustainable income generation. This study aims to assess the income generation potentials of two indigenous fruits in specific markets within the State. The research conducted a comprehensive analysis of market dynamics, fruit tree availability, sales patterns, and the economic viability of these fruits as potential sources of income for the resource poor population especially women. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with key informants, fruit tree vendors, along with quantitative surveys to collect data on fruit sales and profit margins. Two prominent indigenous fruit were identified for the purpose of this study, they include Bush pear (Dacryodes edulis) and African walnut (Plukenetia conophora). The majority (90%) of the respondents were female, (65%) majority of the respondents were married. The respondents mostly purchased fruits from other traders (90%), and sold them mainly at roadside locations (57.5%), the preferred container for conveying the fruits were bags (52.5%). Health benefits and seasonality were identified as important factors affecting demand for fruits (44.2% and 34.2%) respectively. The profitability analysis showed that both Dacryodes edulis and Plukenetia conophora generated positive returns on investment and net incomes. The willingness-to-pay survey revealed that 60% of respondents were willing to pay for the conservation of indigenous fruit trees, with a preference for voluntary contributions managed by tree owners or fruits sellers’ association. Weekly and monthly payments were favored. The research recommends targeted interventions to promote the sustainable cultivation, harvesting, and marketing of indigenous fruit trees in Edo State. These interventions include capacity-building programs for farmers on improved cultivation techniques, establishment of fruit processing centers, and market linkages to enhance access to wider markets.
