Ageratum conyzoides commonly known as Billygoat weed is an annual herb with a long history in
its benefits as a traditional medicine in many countries in the world. It has several phytochemicals
including phenol, tannin, flavonoid, and steroid which has been reported for its antioxidant
activity, anticancer and antidiabetic properties. The phytochemicals assayed for this study were
phenols, tannins, flavonoids, and steroids. The results obtained from this study shows that the
aqueous extract of A. conyzoides was abundant in tannins (26.83 ± 1.67 mgGAE/g), flavonoids
(26.41 ± 0.00 mgQE/g), steroids (17.08 ± 1.08 mgDE/g) and phenols (1.38 ±.0.68 mgGAE/g)
respectively. The plant's abundance of phytochemicals suggests that it has therapeutic potential
and other medical benefits like the treatment and management of diabetes, cancer, malaria.
