ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal motility is crucial for proper digestion and absorption of nutrients. Alterations in motility can lead to various gastrointestinal disorders. Astonia boonei, a plant with medicinal properties in traditional African medicine, presents a potential source for novel therapeutic interventions targeting gastrointestinal motility. OBJECTIVES: 1. Analyze the in vitro activity of the extract on isolated intestinal motility parameters. METHODS: 1. In Vitro Studies: Isolated intestinal motility was evaluated for spontaneous contractions and contractions induced by Carbachol and high potassium chloride. RESULTS: The results showed a concentration dependent Inhibition in all cases CONCLUSION: Astonia boonei has antidiarrheal properties although in need of further elucidation KEYWORDS: 1.
