ABSTRACT
Oxidative stress reflects an imbalance between the systemic manifestation of reactive oxygen species and a biological system's ability to readily detoxify the reactive intermediates or to repair the resulting damage. Oxidative stress is thought to be involved in the development of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, autism, infection, chronic fatigue syndrome and depression. In this review, we will describe the most recent findings on the oxidative stress field, highlighting both its bad and good sides for human health. Medicinal plants, also called medicinal herbs, have been discovered and used in traditional medicine practices since prehistoric times. Plants synthesize hundreds of chemical compounds for various functions, including defense and protection against insects, fungi, diseases, and herbivorous mammals. The objectives of this study were to analyze the in vitro Scavenging properties of the ethanol extract of Ageratum conyzoides on 12, 2-azino-bis (3- ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonicacid (ABTS) radical, Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP) radical, DPPH Radical, Total Antioxidant Power (TAP). DPPH standard Ascorbic acid was used and the standard IC50 (1646 µg/ml) and extract IC50 (2556 µg/ml) which indicates that the standard has a higher inhibition than the extract. ABTS Gallic acid was used and the standard IC50 (49344 µg/ml) and extract IC50 (1167 µg/ml) which indicates that the extract has a higher inhibition than the standard which shows that the plant has more medicinal properties. FRAP standard Ascorbic acid was used and the standard IC50 (4 µg/ml) and extract IC50 (287 µg/ml) which indicates that the standard has a higher inhibition than the extract.
