ABSTRACT

This research project investigates the in vitro antidiabetic and antipancreatic lipase activity of Tetrapleura tetraptera alkaloids fraction. T. tetraptera, commonly known as "Aridan fruit," is renowned for its traditional medicinal properties and culinary uses in various cultures around West Africa. This study explores the potential benefits of its alkaloids in the management of diabetes and obesity-related complications. The research methodology involves the extraction of alkaloids from T. tetraptera and subjecting them to in vitro tests to evaluate their impact on diabetes and the inhibition of pancreatic lipase. The anti-diabetic properties aim to assess the extract's ability to regulates blood glucose levels, while the anti-pancreatic lipase activity investigates its potential in controlling dietary fat absorption. The results of this study shows that α-amylase had a lower IC50 value (916.01µg/mL) when compared to the standard (1263.43µg/mL). It was also observed that α-glucosidase also had a lower IC50 value when compared to the standard (9.81µg/mL). For pancreatic lipase and protein glycation, the standard showed to have a higher IC50 value (2338.00µg/mL & 0.013µg/mL) compared to T. tetraptera alkaloid fraction (2409.09 µg/ml & 0.065 µg/ml) respectively. In conclusion, this could offer a valuable insight into the therapeutic potential of T. tetraptera alkaloids, contributing to the development of natural remedies for diabetes and weight management. Such knowledge is vital in the pursuit of alternative, potentially safer treatments for these prevalent health concerns.
