ABSTRACT
Inflammation is a biological response to harmful stimuli, often associated with conditions such as arthritis, pain, and autoimmune diseases. Natural products, particularly plant extracts, have gained interest for their potential therapeutic effects due to their anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. This study investigates the anti-inflammatory activity of Cleistopholis patens methanol stem bark extract, using in vitro assay techniques including protein denaturation, heat-induced hemolysis, hypotonicity-induced hemolysis, and antiproteinase activity. For each assay, controls, standard drugs (aspirin or indomethacin), and various concentrations of the plant extract (125, 250, 500, 1000, 2000, and 4000 µg/mL) were tested in quintuplicates to ensure accuracy and reproducibility. The extract demonstrated significant (p < 0.05, p < 0.01) and concentration-dependent inhibitions of proteinase, protein denaturation as well as hemolysis relative to control. The highest potency of the extract was exhibited on proteinase activty. The results suggest that the extract of Cleistopholis patens possesses anti-inflammatory properties supporting its use in folk medicine for inflammatory diseases.
