ABSTRACT
Yam (Dioscorea Spp) a tropical crop that belong to the family Dioscoreacea. It is one of the most important staple food crops in West Africa. It can be can be cultivated by conventional and non-conventional method. The conventional method of yam cultivation involves traditional practices like manual land preparation, planting seed yam directly on land. This method has been used for generations and is deeply rooted in the agricultural practices of many regions. The bag method in yam cultivation is a non-conventional technique where seed yam are grown in bags filled with a suitable growing medium such as soil or a mixture of soil and compost. This method allows for better control of growing conditions, especially in areas with limited land or poor soil quality. The bags provide a contained environment for the yam plants to grow, making it easier to monitor and manage their growth. The objective of the studies was to compare tuber yield between conventional and non-conventional cultivation of yam and to determine whether the whole seed yam will emerge before cut seed yam in non-conventional cultivation. The experimental site was at a private farm in Ogida, Benin city. The experiments were laid out as paired plot because each experiment had two treatments. At harvest the tuber weight, girth, length were recorded for the first experiment, at four weeks after planting the number of days to emergence, vine length, number of nodes were recorded for the seed yams that had emerged in the second experiment. Data collected were analyzed with unequal variance t-test, conventional and bag cultivation method had significant difference in the tuber weight at 0.05 level of probability, while the tuber length and girth had no significant difference. In the second experiment significant difference at 0.05 level of probability in number of days to emergence, vine length and number of nodes was observed. In conclusion the tuber yield of conventional method was higher with the tuber weight greater than that of bag method, also whole yam seeds emerged before cut yam seeds
