ABSTRACT
Compressed air is confined in a given space under pressure that is greater than atmospheric pressure. It is widely used as a power source in industry to power tools in conveyor, manufacturing and converting processes, refrigeration, filtration, and aeration processes, vehicle, and machine doors. The use of compressed air can be used for the lifting of objects, transfer of motion and power, materials handling etc. as applicable in pneumatic systems. Many industries around the world today rely heavily on the use of air in its compressed and non-compressed form to carry out many industrial processes like vertical and horizontal motion transfer, bottle capping, fluid spray, agro processing, aerodynamics, for power tools such as air hammers, drills, wrenches and others, as well as to atomize paint, to operate air cylinders for automation, and can also be used to propel vehicles amongst others.
Improved design and fabrication of compressed air storage system using renewable energy source involves the collection of waste or defective refrigerant compressors, refurbishing them and converting them to pumps for air suction and storage in storage cylinders. The two concepts considered were compressor and storage using LPG gas cylinder. The cylinder which is usually found in domestic kitchens shown comes in various weight specification with respect to the amount of gas it can hold. They include the 3kg, 4kg, 6kg and the 12kg and the 25kg types. Concept 2, compressor, and storage using refrigerant gas cylinder. The cylinder which is commonly found in domestic fridge and air-conditioners repair shops. The efficiency of the designed and fabricated compressed air storage system using locally sourced materials was 74.56% which showed a good operational process and good improvement in the fabricated machine’s output productivity.
