ABSTRACT
The language of Femi Fani-Kayode was evaluated in this study to determine the impoliteness methods prominent in his tweets. Impoliteness is a social issue because it disturbs societal harmony. Thus, this study looked at Femi Fani-Kayode's tweets on X(formerly Twitter) to investigate how Femi Fani-Kayode's unpleasant language can cause division, disharmony, and hate rivalry among political parties and, by extension, society. This study was conducted under the umbrella of socio-pragmatics because it depended to an extent on the contextual analysis of the data presented. The research was limited to the study of a particular politician named Femi Fani-Kayode and his tweets during the 2023 general election discourse. The data were examined to reveal the impoliteness in his tweets as well as show the effects of such use of language. Also, the theoretical model adopted for this research was Jonathan Culpeper's impoliteness theory. Because no statistical or numerical data were sourced, the qualitative data research method was used for data analysis in this study. As a result, it was carried out by extensive reading, data observation, taking notes, and generating subjective assessments or judgements based on the available facts. The discovered impoliteness tactics utilized by Femi Fani-Kayode are bald-on-record and negative impoliteness. The examination of Femi Fani-Kayode's tweets indicated that he was deliberate in his use of unpleasant language against his targets who happened to be public figures and politicians. On a closer look, it was discovered that his reasons for using impoliteness in public discourse include the following: to express his personal opinions about his preference for a specific presidential candidate—Tinubu, to run down his fellow politicians by making them unelectable, and to garner support and votes for his preferred candidate. The use of impoliteness by Femi Fani-Kayode in the public conversation has certain negative consequences such as inciting discord and intolerance, resulting in hate rivalry among political parties as well as society. Thus, impoliteness should be discouraged in its entirety so as to create peaceful coexistence in our society.
