ABSTRACT
This study determined the implication of patterns of communication between parents and their children on academic performance in selected schools in Egor local government area in Edo state. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The study employed a cross sectional research design. The population of the study consist of 1050 students which comprises of 210 students from each school in Egor L. G. A who are in classes S. S.1, S. S. 2, and S. S. 3. The sample consisted of two hundred (200) students in the five randomly selected schools in Egor Local Government Area. A simple random sampling technique (20%) was used to select the sample size of the study.
The instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled Implication of patterns of communication between parents and their children on academic performance- the guidance counselor intervention Questionnaire (IPCBPCAP).It was however subjected to face validity by the researcher’s supervisor and two other expert in the Department of Educational Evaluation and Counseling Psychology , Faculty of Education, University of Benin. The reliability was determined using the internal consistency method which was measured using Cronbach alpha statistic. The instrument was administered to 20 secondary school students who are not part of the sample to be used for this study but are part of the population of the The data collected were used to analyze the mean and standard deviation
The study found that parents communication styles with their children have great influence on students’ educational development and academic performance . Based on the findings of the study, it was recommended amongst others: Parents should embrace the authoritative parenting communication style as it has high responsiveness which will enhance proper communication between them and their children.
