ABSTRACT
Taken together, this research work shows that the transatlantic slave trade in Nigeria, is a crucial cause of the underdevelopment in Nigeria, both during and after its abolition. Many West African slaves especially those from the Nigerian region, in the western hemisphere, resisted oppression and managed to secure their independence. Despite enormous racial discrimination, oppression and repression among other reactionary tendencies from plantation overlords, slaves from the Nigerian coast managed to retain certain elements of their collective memories. It is important to note that most Africans did not find the slave trade favourable. They did indeed oppose slavery. However, the unfortunate reality was that by the time these efforts to resist began, it was already too late. From the last third of the 16th century to the early 17th century, the Portuguese, Dutch, French and English merchants greedily expanded the slave trade internationally.
