Abstract
This study investigated the impact of teachers’ teaching methods on students' academic performance in the public senior secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha local government area of Edo State. Four research questions guided the students, The study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised of all the twenty (20) public senior secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha local government area of Edo State. The respondents were the thirteen thousand, three hundred and thirty (13,330) public senior secondary school students in Ikpoba Okha local government area of Edo State. Four (4) schools were selected as the sample size from the twenty (20) public senior secondary schools using the simple random sampling technique and this represent twenty (20) percentage of the study population, Meanwhile, twenty-five (25) students were chosen from each sampled school making one hundred (100) students as respondents using convenient sampling technique. A Questionnaire titled “IMPACT OF TEACHERS’ TEACHING METHOD ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE QUESTIONNAIRE (ITTMSAPQ)” was used. The reliability of the instrument was tested using the test re-test method and the result was calculated with the application of Pearson’s Product Method Correlation Coefficient and the reliability coeffient was obtained to be 0.77. Simple percentages was used to analyze the data collected.
The findings revealed that enhanced student engagement, promotion of critical thinking and problem-solving skills, improvement in knowledge retention and understanding, and the creation of a dynamic and interactive classroom environment are the benefits of using different teaching methods in the public senior secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha local government area of Edo state.
From the findings, it was concluded thatenhanced student engagement, creation of a dynamic and interactive classroom environment and catering for diverse learning styles are the impact of teachers’ teaching methods on students’ academic performance in the public senior secondary schools in Ikpoba Okha local government area of Edo state.
The following recommendations were made: Government should promote a culture of innovation and openness to new teaching approaches, including interactive methods. Teachers should create a student-centered learning environment that encourages students to take ownership of their learning and actively participate in class activities. Teachers should be provided with proper training and support to effectively implement interactive teaching methods in their classrooms.
