IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to investigate the impact of social mеdіа on students’ academic performance in higher institution in Edo State. In a bid to achieve the purpose intended, four (4) research questions were raised to enable the researcher achieve the objectives of the study.
The study adopted Description Survey Research Design. The population of this study consists of all the 732 sandwich students in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology, Faculty of Education, University of Benin from 100 to 600 Level currently in the program. The sample consists of Two Hundred (200) 500 and 600 level sandwich students in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology, Faculty of Education. The instrument used for data collection was the structured questionnaire. The face and content approach were used to determine the validity of the instrument, while a pilot testing method was used to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, mean, standard deviation and independent sample t-test
The analysis revealed that the benefit of social mеdіа on students’ academic performance in higher institution in Edo State is enormous if properly used. This can influence the standard of education in the society. It should also the noted that as much as social media platform can be used for good it can also have detrimental effect on the educational health of student. Student should be cautioned on the use of social media platform so it doesn’t affect the academic performance. Based on the findings, the researcher recommended that the government should consider the possibility of evolving a policy on teenagers’ exposure to social media through the provision of ICT Libraries and computers; Students should decrease their introduction to social media and give careful consideration to their studies. This should be achieved by parent monitoring what
contents are been viewed by their children and wards and the importance of social media platform should be introduced to students as early as higher primary class or JSS 1.
