ABSTRACT

In the contemporary global arena, the emergence and proliferation of social media platforms have revolutionized the landscape of international relations, reshaping the dynamics of diplomacy and foreign policy. This study delves into the intricate interplay between social media and Nigeria's foreign policy from 2011 to 2023; it addresses critical questions regarding its impact, challenges, and opportunities. The research is driven by the pressing need to understand the profound implications of social media on Nigeria's diplomatic engagements and strategic interests. It explores how the adoption of social media platforms by Nigerian policymakers, diplomats, and citizens has influenced the formulation, implementation, and perception of the country's foreign policy objectives. The study combines qualitative content analysis of official social media accounts, diplomatic discourse analysis, and surveys of public opinion to gain multifaceted insights into the phenomenon. The study revealed that social media has become a pivotal tool for Nigeria's foreign policy projection, facilitating rapid dissemination of information, shaping public opinion, and engaging with global audiences. However, the study also identifies challenges such as misinformation, cyber threats, and the risk of diplomatic gaffes, highlighting the need for better strategies to harness the potential of social media while mitigating its risks. The study concludes by underscoring the transformative impact of social media on Nigeria's foreign policy landscape, emphasizing the imperative for adaptive policymaking and diplomatic practices in the digital age. It also emphasizes the importance of proactive engagement, strategic communication, and capacity-building efforts to leverage the opportunities presented by social media platforms effectively. Based on the research findings therefore, the study recommends; investing in digital literacy programs, enhancing cybersecurity measures, fostering strategic partnerships with tech companies, and developing guidelines for responsible social media usage in diplomatic contexts.
