IMPACT OF SEXUALITY EDUCATION IN REDUCING UNPROTECTED SEXUAL INTERCOURSE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OVIA NORTH EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the impact of Sexuality education in reducing unprotected Sexual Intercourse among secondary school students in Ovia North East Local Government area of Edo State. This study aims to investigate the impact of sexuality education in reducing unprotected sexual intercourse among secondary school students. Sexuality education influences sexual behaviour of students. This study work will encourage secondary school students to take sexuality education serious. The study examined the concept of sexuality education, among secondary school students, the impact of sexuality education in reducing unprotected Sexual Intercourse, the role of parents towards the teaching of Sexuality education, knowledge and attitudes of sexuality education to secondary school students, challenges to the promotion of sexuality education in secondary schools. To guide the study five different research questions were raised during the research. The study adopted the use of descriptive survey research design, the study population consisted of 3160 secondary school students in Ovia North East Local Government area of Edo State and for the sampling 300 respondents were used for the study. The instrument used in data collection was the structured questionnaire which was designed by the researcher. The data collected were analyzed using simple percentage and frequency for descriptive analysis. The findings of the study on the impact of sexuality education in reducing unprotected sexual Intercourse among secondary school Students in Ovia North East Local Government area of Edo State,the researcher found out that their is limited knowledge on the impact of sexuality education among secondary school students. Also in the findings, research found out that sexuality education is not taught in all the secondary schools yet thereby limiting students in gaining the necessary information needed in avoiding unprotected sexual Intercourse. Also it was found out that majority of parents detest sexual health discussion, this also has been a setback in passing out sexual health information to the students as parents ought to be a major contributor to sexuality education. There is high percentage of secondary school students who are not familiar with condoms and other contraceptives these secondary school students should be made familiar with how to use condoms and other contraceptives for those who are sexually active.
