IMPACT OF SEASONAL CLIMATIC VARIATION ON CLOTHING DEMAND IN WARRI METROPOLIS, DELTA STATE

ABSTRACT

This study examines the impact of seasonal climatic variation and clothing demand of Warri Metropolis, Delta State, Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to examine the seasonal climatic variation that occurs in Warri Metropolis; to examine the impact of seasonal climatic variation and clothing demands; to examine the determinant nature of seasonal climatic variations and clothing preference, and finally to examine the perception of the public on clothing demands. Questionnaires were administered to a total of 400 respondents and the data collected was fed into the SPSS. Using the frequency table and regression model to test stated hypothesis, it was found that the prevailing seasonal climatic condition affects individuals clothing demand as well as other socio-economic factors such as religion and cultural orientation, income of individuals, fashion and social status. From the study, it has been discovered that climatic variation is apparent with majority of the respondents affirming that they experience excessive heat, cold, and rain.The study population also affirmed that climatic variation leads to increased demand for clothes.It has also been noticed from the study that respondents affirmed that the variables of excessive heat; cold; relative humidity; and flooding are determinant natures of seasonal climatic variation on clothing preference. The study recommend that wastes should be properly managed and laws restricting the careless dumping of wastes and environmental policy that prohibits environmental pollution should be enacted.
