ABSTRACT
This study explores the impact of marital separations on wives and children within the context of Egor Local Government Area, Edo State. The phenomenon of marital separation, wherein couples live apart while still married, has become increasingly prevalent in contemporary society, yet its effects on family members remain relatively understudied, particularly within the Nigerian context. Through qualitative research methods including interviews and focus group discussions, this study examines the experiences of wives and children affected by running separate homes due to marital discord. Findings from the study reveal the multifaceted challenges faced by wives and children in such situations, including emotional distress, financial instability, and social stigma. Wives often bear the brunt of household responsibilities and childcare duties in the absence of their spouses, leading to increased stress and feelings of isolation. Children may experience disruptions in their routines, emotional turmoil, and difficulties maintaining relationships with both parents. The implications of these findings for social work practice in Egor Local Government Area are profound. Social workers play a critical role in providing support, advocacy, and intervention services to families experiencing marital discord and separation. This includes counseling services for wives and children to address emotional trauma and coping strategies, as well as financial assistance and legal support to ensure their rights and well-being are protected. Additionally, community-based initiatives aimed at raising awareness and reducing stigma surrounding marital separation can help foster a supportive environment for affected families. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the often-overlooked consequences of marital separations on wives and children and underscores the importance of tailored interventions and support services within the context of social work practice in Egor Local Government Area. By addressing the unique needs and challenges faced by families experiencing marital discord, social workers can play a vital role in promoting family stability, resilience, and well-being in the community.
