IMPACT OF PRISONS REHABILITATION PROGRAMMES ON INMATES IN OKO CORRECTIONAL HOME

ABSTRACT

This study examines the impact of rehabilitation programmers on inmates in Oko correctional center Benin City, Edo state. It investigate the nature of rehabilitation training given to the inmates of the Oko correctional center, find out the effect of rehabilitation programmers on inmates in Oko correctional home and to ascertain the skills acquisition programmers that aid inmate rehabilitate in Oko correctional home. For this study, the rehabilitation theory was adopted to explain the issue under investigation. The quantitative techniques were utilized to collect data from the respondents in the field and 310 copies of questionnaires were administered to respondents and their responses were utilized in explaining the information gathered. Conclusion and recommendations were made based on the findings of the study. This study found that inmate involvement in rehabilitation programmers will make them more creative, it will help change their negative attitude, it will help in reducing inmate correctional center misconduct and it help in the psychological and social development of inmates while in castration and after release. This study also suggest that correctional homes should be properly funded by the Government to increase the equipments and material needed for the rehabilitation of inmates, there should be provision of more recreational activities in the prisons by the government, since inmates preferred one recreational activity to the other also the schools within the correctional centers should be equipped with educational facilities and qualified teachers are established within the prisons premises.
