ABSTRACT
This research project was based on the concerns related to the wrong disposal of municipal wastes in Nigeria, especially in residential areas. It aimed at the assessment of groundwater quality of boreholes in the vicinity of open dumpsites in olukun, Benin City, Edo State. Groundwater samples were taken from three different wells close to otufure dumpsites in Olunkun and subjected to physical, chemical and bacteriological analysis. The results obtained from the laboratory analysis were compared with NSDWQ and WHO standards. These results revealed that the three samples collected either possess low or high physical, chemical and bacteriological parameters. Improper sanitation management and lack of environmental enlightenment of the masses could be the major problem for groundwater quality in the study area. Generally, the water from the wells require treatment if they must be used for drinking purpose.
