ABSTRACT
The objective of the study is to examine the impact of Intimate Partner violence on child welfare and upbringing in Egor local government area, Edo state.
The descriptive survey research design was employed in carrying out this study. The population of the study consist of residents of Egor local government area, Benin City, Edo state. The convenience sampling technique was used to select a sample of 150 respondents which were taken as samples for the study. The research instrument was the questionnaire, administered manually to respondents. The data gathered were analyzed using descriptive statistics.
The study discovered that Intimate partner violence is primarily brought on by severe drinking and drug use, a lack of affection, animosity, and fury, as well as poor self-esteem. The effects of intimate partner violence on child welfare and upbringing are negative and detrimental to the well-being of the child. The types of intimate partner violence that the child experiences include physical violence, destruction of property, stalking of family members, and psychological aggression. The likely solutions that will play a major role in reducing the prevalence of intimate violence include providing self-help groups and removing the child from the environment. The study recommends that children can get the assistance and direction they need from mental health services and resources to deal with the trauma of IPV. Children who have access to mental health specialists like therapists, counsellors, and psychologists may benefit notably in processing their experiences, fostering resilience, and learning appropriate coping mechanisms.
