ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Information and Communication Technology in the learning of cell structures and functions in biology in secondary schools.
This study utilized a descriptive survey research design. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The population of the study comprise of senior secondary schools (public) biology students in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample for this study consists of three hundred and sixteen (316) students. The random sampling technique was used as the research instrument for the study. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by the researcher's supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology, while the test-retest reliability method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. The collected data were examined using the mean and standard deviation.
The study indicates that students encounter difficulties such as technical issues, finding reliable online resources, limited access to ICT resources for learning cell biology. It was agreed that integrating ICT into cell biology lessons makes learning more enjoyable, interactive, engaging and effective. It was agreed that ICT-based learning approaches positively impacts on the academic performance of learners. It was agreed that integrating ICT-based learning approaches into secondary school biology curriculum or education would better prepare students for future careers in science and technology fields. The researcher recommend that technical support should be established to assist students with trouble shooting and resolving technical issues promptly, ICT resources should be made available to the students to motivate their learning interest, teachers should ensure that the ICT-based learning approaches employed, positively impacts on the academic performance of the student, and that ICT tools should be integrated into the biology curriculum, to enhance interactive and experiential learning.
