ABSTRACT
Households in developing countries especially in Nigeria are increasingly facing high food prices due to increase in fuel price. This has negatively affected their food consumption, investment, food consumption patterns and feeding pattern. Hence this study was carried out in other to examine the impact of fuel price increase on the feeding pattern on residents in Egor local government area of Edo state, Nigeria. The study was carried out in Egor local government area. A Two (2) stage sampling procedure was adopted for the study. Data was collected from both primary and secondary data sources. The Data collect was analyzed using Statistical Packages for Social Science (SPSS 24) to generate percentage, frequencies, means and tables. It was observed that increase in price of fuel had adverse effect on the consumption pattern on residents in the local government area. Although, price is not the most important determinant of consumption of all commodities. Necessity was more important than price in consumption. Majority of the respondents from the study area have to adjust to the impact of increase fuel price by reducing quantity of food they consume, decrease travelling frequency, reduce the extra usage of additional vehicle, reduces recreation, reduces luxury, increase in the cost of transportation, reduce the quantity and quality of food and reduction in consumption of preferred food. Hence it is recommended that Government should try to minimize the impact of a fuel price increase on the poor by assisting respondents with social security such as cash transfer schemes and other forms of safety nets. Also, governments can take a number of measures to enhance supplies and address the issue of the refineries not working at full capacity.
