ABSTRACT
The study assesses the Impact of financial stress on students’ academic achievement in higher institutions. The study was aimed to find out the sources of financial stress among students in the University of Benin, discover how financial stress affects students' academic performance and overall well-being in the University of Benin, and identify the coping mechanisms students employ to manage financial stress in the University of Benin.
This study adopted the survey research design. The study population comprised all undergraduate students in the University of Benin. And a sample size of 100 was randomly selected. The instrument of data collection was a questionnaire. The instrument was validated by experts. The data collected was analyzed using Descriptive statistics.
The findings revealed that financial stressors are not only recognized but also deeply felt by students, influencing various aspects of their lives. Financial stress can manifest in several ways, such as increased anxiety, reduced concentration, and diminished motivation, all of which can significantly hinder academic performance. It also showed the importance of providing students with access to resources and support services that facilitate effective coping mechanisms.
