IMPACT OF FESTAC 77 ON NIGERIA’S SOCIAL-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT 1966-1977

ABSTRACT

This study has shown the impact of festac 77 on Nigerias socil and economic developmentfrom 1966 to 1977. FESTAC '77, as a monumental cultural event, marked a turning point in Nigeria's post-independence socio-economic trajectory, showcasing the nation's cultural wealth whileemphasizing its position as a leader in Pan-Africanism. The festival fostered cultural exchange, reawakened African identity, and contributed to the global appreciation of Africanart and traditions. However, while its socio-cultural impact was immense, its economic benefits were mixed. The festival highlighted Nigeria's potential as a hub for cultural tourism but exposedinefficiencies in resource management, with significant funds allocated to infrastructure andorganization that yielded limited long-term economic benefits. Moreover, the prioritization of FESTAC amidst economic challenges, including declining oil revenues and increasing publicdiscontent, reflected broader issues of governance and fiscal responsibility during the military era. While FESTAC '77 symbolized Nigeria's cultural renaissance and pride in African heritage, its socio-economic impact remained constrained.by short-sighted planning and the economicvolatility of the period. Nevertheless, its legacy continues to influence Nigeria's culturalpolicies and underscores the need for a balanced approach to leveraging cultural heritage forsustainable development.
