ABSTRACT
The study examined the impacts of Farming on the development of Esan North-east as as well as its role in the sustenance of the people, using historical method with the adoption of both primary and secondary sources of data. The study began with a historical origin of what we know and refer to today as the Esanland and the Esan people of Edo state. Through this historical examination, the study discovered that farming has been a major and primary factor upon which the wellbeing, sustenance as well as the general development of Esanland and the people is anchored. Agriculture remains the dominant occupation of Esan people which subsequently provided the basis for other economic activities, including trade and industrialization. It served as a major source of food; source of income for the people; provided platform for trade, industry and intergroup relations among Esan people and their near and distant neighbors and as well serves as the primary source of raw materials for industries. The research, in assessing the economic activities of Esan people, finds that the people of Esanland during the period of study were both the means of production and beneficiaries of development that were recorded in the area. They successfully manipulated their environment 72 and efficiently maximized the natural resources of the land for the common good of the people - to make sustainable livelihood and achieve socio-economic development. Skillful management of land and exploitation of other natural resources were the key factors that led to the development of Esanland.
