ABSTRACT
This research work reveals the impact air pollution education has on the knowledge and attitude of students towards environment. Students in the department of health safety and environmental education were used for the experimental group because the department has specialized course provision for environmental education and award of degree in environmental education while the department of human kinetics and sports sciences was used as the control group because the department does not offer a course in environmental education or environment related programmes. Data was collected using questionnaire. A total of 50(fifty) questionnaires were issued to 50 respondents, 25(twenty-five) from the department of health safety and environmental education and the other 25(twenty-five) from the department of human kinetics and sports sciences yielding a ratio 50:50 for both experimental and control group respectively. Data collected were analyzed using fourpoint modified scale of attitude measurement (of SD=strongly Disagree, D=disagree, A=agree and SA=strongly agreed) and calculated using the mean score statistical formula. The result obtained the analysis of data revealed that the knowledge gained from the teaching of environmental education in classrooms is equal to the knowledge acquired by the students positively. The students were not just learned previously about air pollution and it's consequences, but action takers in order to protect the earth and maintaining balance in the natural environment. The results of the analyzed data make it possible to suggest to the both departments to uphold the teaching of environmental issues most importantly, air pollution as part of their classroom instructions. The department of health safety and environmental education should further strengthen the practical related teaching about the environment while the department of human kinetics and sports sciences as well as all other departments should consider environmental knowledge as general study especially for the protection of the immediate environment and the fight against air pollution amongst students. Environmental education is the only tool for combating negative attitude of people towards wastes management as it’s is a collective responsibility, since it adhere to inculcate environmental consciousness, values, skills and ethics government should recommend it at various level of education in other to have a holistic orientations for our future leaders, politicians, planners, economists, scientists, technologists, industrialists, agriculturalists and decision makers in our country, with this adequate funding, effective monitoring, and compliance of environmental policies can be achieved.
