ABSTRACT
This study analysed the impact of close proximity of septic tank to selected borehole water in Ring Road, Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State. The aim of this research was achieved by determining the physicochemical and bacteriological parameters of the water samples from boreholes. The Parameter analysed for were pH, conductivity, turbidity, suspended solid, alkalinity, chloride, phosphate, sulphate, nitrate, ammonium, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand and temperature, total coliform, E. coli, and Streptococcus faecalis.Parameters were compared with the WHO standard for drinking water to compare levels with safe standard.The pH of the water samples analysed ranged from4.60 to 5 in the study area,conductivity ranged from 20.00 to 240.00 μS/cm,turbidity values ranged from 0.00 to 11.00 NTU,suspended solid ranged from 1.00 to 5.00. Alkalinity value range from 6.00 to 10.00. Chloride value ranged from 63.54 to 70.60,sulphate level ranged from 2.00 to 15. Nitrate ranged from 1.51 to 3.52Ammonium ranged from 1.85 to 4.29, dissolved oxygen ranged from 6.90 to 8.80. Biological oxygen Demand ranged from 2.30to 4.70.Total coliform ranged from 1435 to 4333 cfu/100ml, Aerobic mesophil ranged from 2200 to 3266 cfu/100ml and fungi/yeast ranged from 2666 to 4443 00× 102 cfu/100ml. All station tested negative to E. coli and Streptococcus facelis as no amount of it was recorded in any of the sampling stations. 8Monitoring the siting of borehole is therefore important to preventing groundwater contamination.
