ABSTRACT
This project examined the impacts of climate change on farming activities in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State. The study area was stratified by nature into two on the basis of differences of topography- riverine and hinterland. The area has ten communities and 53 villages. Communities of the riverine area have six villages and that of the hinterland area have forty-four villages. 25% sampling intensity was used for sample selection, three and eleven villages were randomly selected using random number table from the riverine and hinterland area. A total number of 180 questionnaires were distributed and 170 retrieved.
Thirty years climate variable (Temperature and rainfall) data from the meteorological station in chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam. Descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentages were used to analyse the data collected. 90.6% of the respondents were aware of climate change and 89.4% agreed there was fluctuation in both rainfall and temperature pattern. The results showed that farm outputs have not been consistent due to climate change. 77.1% of the respondents had trees on their farms which serve as shade, fruits and firewood. Annual mean temperature and rainfall from 1991 to 2020 had a fluctuating trend. The study shows that the farmers in the area are aware of climate change through change in temperature and rainfall. The farmers acknowledged that the changes have led to lower productivity.
Finally, the farmers should be assisted with early maturing and weather resistant crops to help them avert the menace of climate change. The state ministry of environment and other concerned bodies should work in conjunction with the media to sensitize the farmers on climate change.
