CONCLUSION
This project had attempted an examination of the impact of Christian missionary activities in pre-colonial Uromi, the emergence of the Christian missionary activities in Uromi, the mode of Christian missionary evangelism in Uromi, the impact of Christian missionary activities on social life of Uromi and the impact of Christian missionary activities on economic life of Uromi. Also, the study showed that the Christian ideology of freedom and respect for human rights greatly revolutionized the thought process in the society as it consequently undermined the Uromi traditional political authorities. In fact the missionary’s activities Uromi traditional education and Christianity redefined the Uromi people’s conception of education and religion in post colonial Uromi.
This study showed that although, the people of Uromi may had migrated into their abode at different time but they all claimed common tradition of origin of migration. The people are known to have migrated from Benin kingdom at different times in history, hence the presence of about seventeen villages in Uromi. The people began to embrace Christianity by the first decades of the 20th century when one Rev. Fr. Clement Baunworth in 1908 brought the gospel to the areas.
The study revealed that cultural beliefs, customs, traditions and behaviours has developed throughout its historical experiences and is passed on from one generation to another. The pre-Missionaries culture involves ritual and symbolic aspects such as beliefs, customs, traditions, behaviors, ideal, language, network relationships, attitudes, their way of living, their focus on group loyalties and the way they perceive the world. The people practice traditional African religion and Islam before the arrival of the missionary. In other words, while African traditional religion is indigenous to the people but the Islam and Christianity came recently.
