IMPACT OF CHILD ABUSE ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the impact of child abuse on students’ academic performance in public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and answered. The sample size for the study was made up of one hundred and twenty (120) respondents randomly selected from 20 public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The instrument that was used for the data collection is a structured questionnaire titled “Impact of Child Abuse on Students’ Academic Performance Questionnaire (ICASAPQ)”. Data collected from the respondents was analyzed using descriptive statistics, precisely mean and standard deviation. The findings from the study include that there is high level of prevalence of child abuse among students in public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. It was concluded that there is a significant impacts of child abuse on students’ academic performance in public senior secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The study recommended among others that parents without formal education as well as those with primary and secondary education should be given some form of orientation about what constitute child abuse and neglect. This may help them protect their children against any form of child abuse and neglect.
