A correlation coefficient of 0.79 indicated that the instrument was reliable.Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentages, and mean, while Pearson Correlation statistics were used to test the formulated hypothesesThe study revealed several important findings. First, there is a significant relationship between the teaching skills of PE teachers and the development of sports in secondary schools in Edo State. PE teachers use demonstration methods to teach sports and provide supervision during practical sessions, which has a positive impact on student-athletes' development. Second, the study found a significant relationship between sports competitions organized by PE teachers and the funds mobilized for these competitions, which contribute to the development of sports in the state. However, the study also noted that funding and support for these activities are often insufficient. Lastly, the study showed a significant relationship between the exposure of PE teachers to workshops, conferences, and seminars and the development of sports in secondary schools in Edo State. Participation in these professional development activities enhances the teachers' abilities and helps improve sports programs, which in turn benefits student-athletes. In conclusion, the study found that PE teachers in Edo State effectively use demonstration techniques during practical game sessions and provide supervision, which is important for the development of student-athletes' skills. Periodic sports competitions organized by PE teachers are essential for sports development, but these activities require better funding and infrastructure. Additionally, attendance at workshops, conferences, and seminars by PE teachers contributes positively to the development of sports programs in the state. The study recommends improved funding for organizing sports competitions and maintaining sports facilities in secondary schools. It also emphasizes the importance of encouraging greater participation in professional development opportunities for PE teachers to enhance their teaching skills. Furthermore, it suggests that proper supervision and maintenance of sports facilities should continue to be a priority for PE teachers to support the development of student-athletes. Overall, the study highlights the importance of board games and organized sports competitions in promoting the mental and social well-being of student-athletes in tertiary institutions.
