ABSTRACT

Imagery is a figurative language that uses words to create mental pictures or sensory experience in the minds of the audience or reader detecting imagery is a herculean task, even for human because when written communications is decoded by the reader, it takes a level of understanding to detect imagery. This study approaches this challenging problem primarily from a literary perspective, focusing on the semantic analytic aspects of imagery. Covid 19 and Other Poems, the primary text, was the major focus where the poet expresses his stand on societal decadence using imagery. To achieve different communicative purpose, imagery terms has been detected to have utility, perceptive, and aesthetic values in communication.

In this study, the qualitative research method was adopted because of its naturalistic approach as regards the case study. The collation of data was primarily generated content from Covid 19 and other poems, May 29 and Other Poems, and May 27 and Other Poems respectively. The theory adopted in the study was sociology. It is the symbiotic relationship between literature and the society.

Further looking into the findings of this study, it has been conclusively observed and noticed that the mental representation of imagery is expressed through utilitarian, perception, and aesthetic effect to denounce societal decadence in the text.
