ABSTRACT
This study focused on discovering the impoliteness strategies used in WhatsApp group chats in Nigeria. The first chapter outlined the purpose of the study, the scope of study, methodology, Theoretical background employed in the analysis. The proposed methods of data collection and analysis were also described. The data used were collected from online WhatsApp conversations naturally occurring speech events between different interlocutors. Over 20 conversations were collected and analyzed. H.P. Grice’s cooperative principles in all its ramifications served as the framework for the presentation and analysis of data.
Chapter Two focused on conversational analysis, exploring the various conversational maxims which include maxim of Quality, Maxim of Quantity, maxim of Relation and maxim of manner, showing flouting and implications while chapter Three focused on discourse strategies and Wrongful deployment and chapter 4 also analyses wrongful deployment Emojis and Memes. Chapter Five being the concluding chapter entails the conclusion and finding.
The findings reveal that proper knowledge of the WhatsApp ethics including the appropriate use of Memes and Emojis should be acquired alongside adherence to the Rules of H.P Grice’s Co-operative principles to foster proper and appropriate communication.
