ABSTRACT

This present study was conducted to identify Cryptococcus neoforman isolates from pigeon droppings in Benin City. Fifty-six samples of pigeon droppings were collected from ten locations (markets) in Benin City. Potato Dextrose Agar and Urea Agar Base were prepared and autoclaved at 121oC for 15minutes, and pouring of plate was done under sterile conditions using a laminar flow chamber. Morphological characteristics, microscopic characteristics and Biochemical test (Urease test) were used to identify Cryptococcus neoforman. Cryptococcus neoforman was found to be ovoid in shape. This organism was able to dgrade urea. It can be inferred from this test that 21 samples (37.5%) were positive for Cryptococcus neoforman and 35 samples (62.5%) were negative for Cryptococcus neoforman. Pigeon droppings are considered as dangerous reservoirs and potential sources of inhaled Cryptococcus neoforman. High level of hygiene and regular visits by veterinary specialists to places where these pigeons are kept or sold can prevent the rare at which this disease can be contacted.
