ABSTRACT

Air is understood to be the mixture of gases that is essential for the existence of life on earth. It is a very vital element which has been applied beneficially in numerous aspects of life such as in respiration and in the creation of power and energy. Air is made impure by external and internal factors affecting its production, transfer and delivery. These include products of combustion as well as microorganisms from expiration such as coughing, sneezing amongst others. The presence of air microbes in the indoor environment has been attributed to a variety of sources as earlier stated. The study area was School of Post Graduate Studies in the University of Benin, Ugbowo Campus, Benin City, Edo State. Two office rooms were taken from the first floor of the building which were labelled sampling sites 1 and 2.  Location 1 represents room 10 while Location 2 represents room 15. In the incidence of the airborne microbes, Location one (Room 10) had the highest plate count in cfu/m3 which was in the first week of sampling in January as compared to Location 2 ( Room 15) which had the lowest plate count in the second week of sampling well. This shows that Location one (Room 10) had a higher air microbiota population as compared to other rooms in the same week.
