ABSTRACT

The objective of the study was to evaluate the selection, training, compensation, health and safety practices of small and medium scale enterprise. Data was collected from managers and employees of four eateries located in Benin City. Descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis were used to analyze the data. The finding showed that the SMEs do not employ staff on the basis of their qualification, skills and experience. It was also found that SMEs do not engage in formal training but pay the minimum basic wage and does not provide their staff with protective clothing, first-aid facilities, fire-fighting equipment and waste disposal facilities. It was recommended that human resource managers should design, formulate and implement the use of employment test, formal training, compensation, security for staff and a two-way communication to ensure that employees have all the resources they need to properly carry out their functions towards the achievement of organizational goals.
