HISTORICAL ANALYSIS OF INTERGROUP RELATIONS BETWEEN ESAN AND HER BENIN NEIGHBOURS

ABSTRACT

This work has been able to wrap up a historical analysis of inter group relations between Esan and their Benin neighbours alongside a few of other neighbouring communities. This paper has tried to uncover a rich tapestry of interactions and historical connections through the exploration of historical documents, oral traditions and cultural artefacts we have gained valuable insights into the dynamics between Esan and her neighbouring communities. Through research, we have found that there are a historical and cultural difference that has in turn brought about a strong sense of mutual respect and cooperation between the two groups. This work has revealed that inter group relations between Esan and her Benin neighbour has been shaped by a complex interplay of factors such as trade, migration and cultural exchange. We have observed instances of both cooperation and conflicts through out history, reflecting the intricate nature of inter group dynamics. Research has shown that the Esan communities got to a point whereby they accepted the Benins as a part of them and not just as neighbours and this was extensively seen in the socio-economic and political relations that was discussed in geographical area, their natural components also helped in fostering the relationship between these two regions. Through understanding the historical context of the Esan and Benin people, we can appreciate the shared heritage and communities that bind Esan and its neighbours together and the knowledge can then serve as a foundation fostering great 70 understanding, respect and collaboration in the present and failure. It is crucial to continue exploring and documenting the historical narratives of these inter group relation so we can preserve and celebrate the diverse cultural heritage of Esan and her neighbours, while also promoting dialogue and reconciliation when and where necessary.
