HISTOMORPHOLOGIC EFFECT OF ALLIUM SATIVUM (GARLIC) ON QUININE INDUCED TESTICULAR

ABSTRACT

Allium sativum bulb commonly known as garlic in Nigeria which belongs to the family of Alliaceae is used for culinary and medicinal purposes. This study investigated the histomorphologic effect of Allium sativum (Garlic) on quinine-induced testicular and epididymal damage in adult Wistar rats. Thirty-five (35) adult male Wistar rats weighing 170-220g were used for the study. The rats were grouped into seven groups and these groups were separated into control and experimental groups of five rats each. The group A (control) were given normal mash feed and water daily ad libitum. Group B1 was treated with 20mg/kg body weight of Quinine only, once daily orally for a period of fifty-six (56) days. Group B2 was also treated with 20mg/kg body weight of Quinine only, once daily orally for a period of fifty-six (56) days and then treatment withdrawn for thirty (30) days before sacrifice. Group C1 was treated with 50mg/kg body weight of Allium sativum and 20mg/kg body weight of Quinine once daily orally for a period of fifty-six (56) days. Group C2 was also treated with 50mg/kg body weight of Allium sativum and 20mg/kg body weight of Quinine once daily orally for same period of fifty-six (56) days and then treatment withdrawn for thirty (30) days before sacrifice. Group D1 was treated with 50mg/kg body weight of Allium sativum only, once daily orally for a period of fifty-six (56) days. Group D2 was as well treated with 50mg/kg body weight of Allium sativum only, once daily for same period of fifty-six (56) days and then treatment withdrawn for thirty (30) days before sacrifice. The animals were sacrificed under chloroform anaesthetesia and their testes and epididymides were harvested, fixed in Bouin’s fluid and processed for morphological changes.
