ABSTRACT
Garcinia kola is highly valued for medicinal use. The seeds are chewed as an aphrodisiac or used to cure cough, dysentery, chest colds, liver disorders, diarrhoea, laryngitis, bronchitis, and gonorrhea including its use in the prevention and relieve of headache. It has also been reported for the treatment of jaundice, high fever, and as purgative. Fifteen (15) Adult male Wistar rats were housed in the Department of Anatomy, University of Benin. The animals were allowed to acclimatize for a period of two weeks before commencement of experiment. Garcinia kola were purchased from Uselu market in Benin City. The extract was prepared by freeze dried method at the department of medical biochemistry of the University of Benin. The rats were categorised into three groups Group A was control; Group B was given 500 mg/kg body weight of Garcinia kola, Group C was given 1000 mg/kg body weight of Garcinia kola. At the end of the 28 days experimental period, the rats were sacrificed under chloroform anesthesia. A midline incision was made through the walls of the abdomen and the kidney tissue were dissected out and fixed in 10% buffered formalin for routing histological procedure. The result obtained showed that there was no histological disruption in the cyto-architecture of the kidney of rats treated with the the low dose extract. The kidney tissue of rats treated with the high dose extract showed profuse vascular congestion of the renal vessels.
