ABSTRACT
Liver damage is a significant global health concern influenced by various factors, including nutrition, environment, and genetics. Phenylhydrazine, a known carcinogen, is associated with liver damage and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Curcumin, a bioactive compound found in Curcuma longa (turmeric), is recognized for its antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. The aim of this study is to access the histological protective potentials of aqueous extract of Curcuma longa (turmeric) on phenylhydrazine-induced liver damage in adult Wistar rats. 25 adult Wistar rats were used in the investigation, and they were split into six groups: a control group of three(3) rats, groups receiving 150mg/kg phenylhydrazine of five(5) rats, 200mg/kg of Curcuma longa containing three(3) rats, 400mg/kg of Curcuma longa with three (3) rats, a combination of 150mg/kg of phenylhydrazine + 200mg/kg of Curcuma longa containing five (5) rats, and a combination of 150mg/kg of phenylhydrazine + 400mg/kg of Curcuma longa containing six (6) rats. The histology of the liver was assessed after the treatment period of twenty(21)days. The findings revealed that phenylhydrazine induced severe liver damage, while 200mg/kg of Curcuma longa exhibited protective effects. However, 400mg/kg of Curcuma longa, when combined with phenylhydrazine, led to adverse liver effects. These results emphasize the need for further research to understand the precise mechanisms involved and determine optimal dosages for potential therapeutic applications in liver health.
