HINDRANCES TO POSITIVE INTENTIONS TOWARDS SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL AMONG UNIVERSITY OF BENIN STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

he study focused on the Hindrances to Positive Intentions towards solid waste disposal amongst students of the University of Benin. Specifically, the study seeks to determine if students perceive a personal responsibility for proper solid waste disposal, are aware of the different types of solid waste and their appropriate disposal methods, the level to which environmental education influence students' understanding of responsible solid waste disposal at the University of Benin. Further, in this research work, four (4) research questions were raised to guide this study. A descriptive survey research design was adopted to carry out this study. The population of the study comprises the 16 faculties of the University of Benin. The stratified sampling technique was used to get a sample size of 222 students. The research Instrument used was a structured questionnaire used to obtain data from the sample population. The validity of the instrument was carried out by the supervisor and two other lecturers from the department of Health, Safety and Environmental Education. A test-retest method was used to obtain the reliability of the instrument. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive statistics such as simple percentage and frequency table. The findings of this study revealed that Students of the University of Benin possesses a positive perception towards personal responsibility for proper waste disposal, are aware of the different types of solid waste and their appropriate disposal methods. It was also found out that Environmental education influences students understanding of responsible solid waste disposal. Lastly, it was discovered that the availability and accessibility of designated waste bins on campus impact students' willingness to dispose of waste properly.
