HIGH FRUCTOSE DIET INDUCED HYPERGLYCEMIA AND HYPERINSULINEMIA: PREVENTIVE EFFECTS OF HIGH DOSE OF PAX HERBAL BITTERS

ABSTRACT

Consumption of high fat diet and fructose water has been reported to result in hyperglycemic and hyperinsulinemic state. Hence the urgent need for increased research on the role of medicinal products in the prevention of the hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia caused by high fat and high fructose. Hence this research was undertaken to determine the role of Pax herbal bitters in the prevention of hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia caused by consumption of high fat diet and fructose water. Twenty albino wistar rats were randomly divided into five groups of five rats each. Group 1 was fed the basal diet, group 2 were fed High fructose diet + 10% fructose-water for 8weeks, group 3 was fed High fructose diet + 10% fructose-water + Atorvastatin (0.57 mg/kg-bw) for 8 weeks, group 4 were fed High fructose diet + 10% fructose-water + PAX bitters (1200 mg/kg) for 8 weeks. At the end of the experimental period, the rats were sacrificed and blood samples were collected for fasting blood glucose, serum insulin and insulin resistance. The result showed a significant (P≤0.05) increase in fasting blood glucose, insulin and insulin resistace (HOMA-IR) after induction with high fat diet and fructose water for 8 weeks while treatment with PAX herbal bitters resulted in a significant decrease (P≤0.05) in these parameters. The study has therefore shown that high dose pax herbal bitters can be used for the treatment of hyperinsulinemia and hyperglycemia induced by high fat diet and fructose water.
