ABSTRACT
This study examines herders-farmers relationship and its economic implication in Edo State, using Ikpoba-Okha Local Government area of Edo State as a case study. If a country is to be developed, the importance of being economically viable cannot be overstressed as it is the economy that allows a nation to survive and prosper. Herder and farmers are very important actors in the Nigerian economy, as they are key actors as regards feeding the nation as well as exportation of livestock, while also providing jobs by way of engaging labour. This study was limited to selected communities in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state. Relevant documents and literatures were also utilized to get information for this study. To test the research questions, data was collected using well-structured questionnaires. The simple random sampling method was used to select 100 participants that were used for the study. The data that were gathered through the instrument were analyzed using the simple percentage. The study revealed that the relationship between the herders and the farmers in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area of Edo state is conflictual, resulting from the struggle for scarce resources. These clashes have led to the loss of lives and properties and a general decline in economic activities in the area. The study recommends among other things that the government should improve on the water management practice to cushion the climate change cum water shortage that seem to be driving the herders southward. It recommends that communities that are at the verge of conflict should also be given a platform to come to a drawing table, before it results to a full blown conflict.
